THE CHALLENGE
The importance of developing managers as coaches has been known for decades. When done well, coaching has been demonstrated to drive employee engagement, improve performance and team effectiveness, as well as increase a sense of well-being employees. More recently, extensive research by Google has identified coaching as the number one skill required for managers to be effective.
What is interesting, in our experience we find two common issues when developing managers into coach managers. Firstly, that many well-intended managers often mistakenly think that they are coaching, when they are in fact simply telling people what to do nicely. In other words, they don’t really understand what coaching really is. This then feeds into the second issue, that they overestimate their ability to coach which then means they do not seek opportunities to improve in this area.
OUR BELIEF
The good news is that research also shows, that given enough time and support, managers can significantly improve their ability to effectively coach others to drive better results through others.
We know that to truly develop mangers into coach managers, where they have both the competence and confidence to apply a coaching style of management, we need to take an approach that helps them create a significant shift in their mindset, while building the layers of skills required to be effective in their roles.
Examine the core beliefs and mindset that underlie effective coaching
Analyse the three roles they play as a people manager, and understand the impact of each role
Understand the difference between “event-driven” and “calendar” coaching
Learn a simple coaching framework that is memorable and easy to apply
Practice the core skills of coaching such as building rapport, questioning, listening and genuine curiosity
our approach
In order to make the learning easier and more readily applied back in the workplace, we have developed a simulation style workshop. Through a series of video based scenarios we introduce participants to a number of common people management challenges, that they must address by applying the mindset and skills that are introduced in the workshop.
Specifically, participants will:
